Gold Weight and Unit Calculator

Convert a measured weight or estimate a solid piece’s mass from simple dimensions and a known density. Unknown alloys, hollow pieces and stones need a physical measurement.

Weight conversion starts with a measurement

Enter a mass and choose its unit. Troy ounces used for precious metals are heavier than ordinary avoirdupois ounces; the converter labels both.

Dimensions are an estimate

A bar, solid cylinder or plain rectangular-section band is an idealized model. Rounded profiles, casting voids and attached stones change the real amount of metal.

Density must match the material

Karat describes gold fraction, not the exact alloy recipe or density. Supply a measured or documented density; do not use pure-gold density for an unknown alloy.

Keep weight separate from value

This page estimates total metal mass. Use the separate gold calculator for purity and user-entered price calculations after you have reliable weight and material information.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does this confirm that an item is gold?

No. Neither dimensions nor a conversion proves composition or authenticity.

Can it estimate a hollow or stone-set ring?

No reliable estimate is available from this geometry. The tool returns an inconclusive message for those constructions.

What ring shape is supported?

A plain band modeled as an annular cylinder with rectangular cross-section. Rounded, tapered or decorated bands need a better model or direct weighing.

Are troy ounces and ounces the same?

No. A troy ounce is 31.1034768 grams; an avoirdupois ounce is 28.349523125 grams.
